Press Release May 15, 2012: Announcing Flat Classroom™ Conference Europe 2012 and Flat Classroom™ Conference Asia 2013
Flat Classroom founders, Julie Lindsay and Vicki Davis, are buzzing with excitement over the news to run TWO Flat Classroom Conferences over the next 12 months. Following the shared success of the last conference in Beijing, China in 2011 they are now delighted to announce Flat Classroom™ Conference Europe 2012 (Germany) and Flat Classroom™ Conference Asia 2013 (Japan).
On December 6-8, 2012, the International School of Düsseldorf e.V. (ISD) and on March 8-10, 2013, Yokohama International School (YIS) will host live Flat Classroom events that include a Student Summit and a Leadership Workshop (links to the 2011 for now). Schools are invited to put these dates on their calendar now and plan to be at one or both of these opportunities to experience project-based learning in a conference format.
The Flat Classroom Conference is a unique event that includes students and educators to envision the future of education as they use leading technology tools such as wikis, blogs, social networking and digital storytelling. The conference is diverse in participation while allowing smaller groups to work with leading world-class presenters in a "flattened" environment where virtual participants also join in the conversation and action from remote corners of the world.
This event is targeted to teachers and students of past, current and future Flat Classroom collaborations as well as Information Technology teachers and Directors and school administrators who are responsible for pedagogical development with curriculum design, global collaboration, global competency, and international mindedness in their schools. Essentially everyone involved in the education process, including students are invited to attend and actively participate. Educators will leave the conference understanding how to collaborate globally and with skills and contacts in hand to start projects. Students will leave the conference with leadership skills, technology skills, presentation skills, and a better understanding of diverse cultures and collaboration.
Director of Technology at ISD, Pat D'Arcy says, "We have participated in the Flat Classroom Project for a number of years, and we have found it to be the best model of cooperative learning and a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet and mix with students from all around the world in a virtual educational environment. We felt that a real Face-to-Face experience would be dynamic for our school population to experience, and are delighted to be chosen as a host school."
Head of School at YIS, James Macdonald, says, “On a personal note, I would like to add how excited I am at the possibility of YIS hosting a conference like this. I think the format is very innovative and I think this sort of model is something that we are going to see more of in future. I am not sure of all the benefits that our school will glean from this event, but that is also part of the excitement. I am very confident that with our team here, the facilities that we have, our IT infrastructure and commitment to the Flat Classroom conference, that Yokohama 2013 could be one of the most successful events yet.”
